Back in August I was contacted by the nice folks at Fantasy Art Magazine in China to do an 8 page interview for the September issue! I didn't have a whole lot of new art to send them but I was very excited and flattered to be in their awesome publication. Here's the interview in English:

FAM: Please first introduce yourself

My name is Chris Moffitt and I’m a character artist at RobotEntertainment in Plano, Texas. I’ve worked on several games and one featurefilm since the beginning of my career in November of 2000.

FAM: How did you find your way to becoming an artist?

As far back as I can remember, I’ve always loved to draw. I grewup watching a lot of Disney films and Looney Tunes and that fueled mypassion for art. My parents would encourage me to get better by buying me artsupplies and “how to draw” books and I remember having a small light table thatI would use to trace over my favorite cartoon characters. After a while, Icould draw them from memory and I started experimenting with creating my owncharacters. I later got into reading comic books and that really pushed me to drawthings that were more serious in tone.

FAM: How did you get your first art job? What is thestory of that?

I got my first art job while still in school at the ArtInstitute of Dallas. A fellow student pointed me to a graphic artist positionfor a small company creating designs for mouse pads. I used mostly AdobeIllustrator making designs that incorporated team logos for the NBA, NFL andMLB teams. It wasn’t much of a creative outlet and I really wanted to beworking in the entertainment industry. After graduating, I was fortunate enoughto be hired at Paradigm Entertainment working on my first game title, The Terminator: Dawn of Fate for PS2 andXBOX.

FAM: How did you find your artistic style?

I’m not really sure what my style is or if there’s anything Iconsciously try to do when creating an image or sculpt. I guess I just try tomake things look appealing and give my work as much personality as possible.

FAM: Whichartist has influenced you the most?

There’s so many that I admire and that have influenced me overthe years. It’s really hard to narrow it down to just one.

FAM: How long does a new image generally take you tocreate?

Some images can take 8 or 9 hours, others can take over a month. Itjust depends on the complexity and how many elements are needed to make aninteresting composition.

FAM: How do you train your skill in the usually?

My job really challenges me but I also try to find time outsideof work to create new things. With each new sculpt or image, I try to learn anew technique that will make me more efficient. A lot can be learned from artforums, youtube or even emailing a friend in the industry and asking him how hemight go about it.

FAM: When starting a new work, what is the first thingyou think about? Can you describe your work flow and process?

The first thing I usually think about is the subject matter.Then I try to visualize the subject in the final image. How will he/she beposed? What other elements do I need in the scene? Then I will do some quickthumbs and start thinking about a composition. I try to re purpose work thatI’ve already done to help speed up the process. If I’m creating images to showa model only, I will do render passes and composite them together and not doany touch ups in photoshop but if I’m creating an image that is more of anillustration, I will still use render passes but I will also paint on top ofthe renders to add effects, fur and little things that would take much moretime to do in 3D.

FAM: Do you listen to music while working? What kind ofmusic is your favorite? How does the music affect your artwork?

Yes, I find that instrumental or electronic music is great because it just keepsmy momentum going on projects. Nothing too loud, it’s more to just havesomething in the background and help me toloosen up and relax. If it’s too quiet, I just get sleepy.

FAM: How do you usually find inspiration?

I have a lot of reference from other artists that I usuallyscroll through and then I gather specific photo reference to pull ideas from.

FAM: What is your most difficult challenge when makingart? How do you overcome it?

My most difficult challenge with any image is creating a goodcomposition and that everything reads well. To overcome this, I will usuallystep away from it for a day and come back to it later. The problem areas become more noticeable. Sometimes I might get some fresh eyes on it and have friends or coworkers take a look and see what their initial reactions are, thenadjust accordingly. This helps me break old habits and plan differently witheach new piece.

FAM: How many companies have you worked for? What thepeculiarity of each company your feel? Please simple introduce.

I have worked for 4 different companies in the entertainmentindustry: Paradigm Entertainment, DNA Productions, Ensemble Studios and now,Robot Entertainment. At each of these studios I have worked with many differentamazing, talented people and have learned so much along the way. The projectsbetween these studios were all very different and unique and that has beengreat for me as an artist. I think out of everything I’ve worked on in mycareer, Robot Entertainment’s soon-to-be-released project, Orcs Must Die! is what I’m most proud of and I can’t wait for theworld to get their hands on it.

FAM: Pleasetell me, What your position at the Robot Entertainment?

I am a character artist but Iconsider myself a generalist. I’m most passionate about creating characterconcepts and models but I also create hard surface models like props, weapons,or vehicles.

FAM: Doyou want to talk about your new project the Orcs Must Die? As we know, it is anew type Tower Defend game. Have some new elements in this genre. Could youtell us how do you feeling when you work this game?

Yes, I’m very excited about Orcs Must Die! along with everyone elseat Robot Entertainment. It’s a great blend of 3^rd person action andtower defense and I’ve had such a blast working on it. I feel so much pride forour studio and the work we’ve all done to create this special game.

FAM: Aswe know, like all the Defend Game, we must kill all the Orcs who intrude theintrude. And we got many different type of them. So we want to know is youdesigned/made them? Is they are different with other Orcs who appeared in theother games, like WoW?

Yes, I did get to create theorcs for the game but I get a lot of feedback from the art director and other concept artists, so it's very collaborative. One of the many challenges was designing them in such a waythat allowed us to have 9 different variations using a mix of gear and facetypes. They needed to have segmented parts but still look ok when bending atthe joints so they all have leather straps around the wrists, elbows, knees andankles to hide the intersections. We wanted the orcs to be low poly enough anduse only one texture set so that we could have many on screen at the same time.I really loved the orcs in WOW but for this game we wanted them to look a bit more comical and so we injected some humor into the designs.

FAM: What the feature of the Orcs Must Die in the vision? Whatthe different feeling of vision it have when the player play it?

I think the main thing that wasdiscussed for the vision was to have a 3^rd person action game, withelements of a tower defense game so that the player cannot solely rely on his fightingabilities alone. He has to use his traps effectively and get in there and fight with his crossbow, sword or magic inorder to win. When you play the game, you will find that there are so many waysto play each level that it makes replaying each level fun every time becauseit’s so open-ended.

FAM: Whattitles of game you had made? And which one you think is the best you had done?

I’ve worked on Terminator: Dawnof Fate, Mission Impossible: Operation Surma, Terminator 3: The Redemption, TheAnt Bully feature film, Halo Wars, Age of Empires Online and Orcs Must Die!.Out of all those, I would say Orcs Must Die! is the best. It is the mostaddictive, appealing game I have ever worked on and it has tons of replay valuethat will keep people coming back for more.

FAM: Weknow you did the 2d works and the 3d works. So we want to know which works youlike more? why?

I think I really enjoy 3D more.There is something about being able to create from all angles and really feellike it’s there in front of you like a piece of clay. I enjoy 2D but sometimesI struggle with perspective and 3D takes out the guesswork. If I have a cameraangle that isn’t working, I can just move my camera and render again. With 2D,I would have to rework everything or even start over. I feel like there are so many great tools formaking digital art that at the end of the day, I’ll use whatever I can to get to the final image.

FAM: Whatkind of 3d games work is the best work? I mean you did some many titles of thevideo game, and you also made so many 3D work for them. It's mean you haveexperience and feeling about what kind of the work is accord with criterion. Doyou want to share with us?

I think it just depends on whatpeople are into. Some people grew up loving cars and so to them maybe that’sthe best thing to work on. For me, I grew up loving characters. That’s all Iever wanted to draw when I was young and so working in games, that to me is the best thing towork on because I can put personality into them and give them history and makethem feel alive. Then the talented animators I work with really bring them tolife and I get to see them move around in game. That is very satisfying.

FAM: Isaw you had many different subject works, the Sci-fi, the fantasy, the superhero. And i think the confronting between the human and the machine is yourfavour, is right? Do you want to tell us way you like this subject?

I think since working at RobotI’ve been inspired to create some robot – themed models. It’s just fun to makeall those moving parts, fitting them together, trying to imagine how it mightoperate and since ZBrush added the shadowbox feature, it is so easy to do veryquickly.

FAM: Whichsuper hero is your favour? Did you made some image of he/she?

I think the Hulk is my favorite.I was obsessed with the Hulk as a kid and even today, I am always moreinterested in how the Hulk is portrayed in films than any other super hero. Oneof my favorite Hulk stories was from the Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk comicsillustrated by Leinil Francis Yu. There’s a 2 page spread that shows the Hulkripping Wolverine in half that just made my jaw drop. I couldn’t believe thathappened! So in 2008, I decided I would do a zbrush sculpt of this scene. Well,it’s 3 years later and I’m still trying to finish it. Hopefully it will getfinished before 2012.

FAM: Whatthe most important point that the artist must have? I mean, except the talent,what thing make the artist as artist?

Create what you love to create.It doesn’t matter what other people think. Do it for you.

FAM: Whatyour plan for the future?

To continue making great games at Robot and working on various sculpting projects.I also hope to someday finish a children’s book and graphic novel that my wifeand I have in the works.

Bowen Taskmaster

Last summer I had the privilege of working with Randy Bowen on my first Bowen Designs statue. It was a lot of work but well worth it. I was happy with how it turned out and will be even happier once I have a copy of it. The first image is a turnaround of the final approved sculpt and the second image is a render from zbrush with glow and smoke fx added in photoshop. I'll post more pics once I have a copy of the statue.

The Hollywood Hulk

So, with the new Marvel superhero movies coming out this year, it's all building up to one big one for 2012 and every fan boy out there is hoping it doesn't suck. The Avengers. This could potentially be the biggest, coolest superhero movie ever... if they do it right. If you've read Mark Millar's Ultimates, it reads like a movie storyboard and it's EPIC.
So far, everything seems to be shaping up and headed in the right direction. The Iron Man films were a huge success, Robert Downey was perfect, Thor looks like it will turn out to be pretty cool (even though I was hoping for something a little more gritty) and even Captain America has me pretty excited (even though Johnny Storm is playing Steve Rogers) The one thing I want to know is, will Hollywood screw up the Hulk again? I took a look at some screen caps from the last 2 Hulk films and had some fun doing some paintovers of how I wish the Hulk had been portrayed on screen.

Ang Lee's version of the Hulk was so disappointing. For whatever reason, they had this dough-eyed, pouty lipped, day glo green, baby-looking Hulk. ILM did a fantastic job rendering his skin and hair and created an amazing muscle system that looked very convincing but the face and bright green hue just ruined it for me.

In Leterrier's Incredible Hulk, his version was a bit better but it didn't stay true to Aaron Sims' concept for the film, which was amazing. In fact, his face seemed to change completely from shot to shot.

The Avengers will have a completely different looking hulk and Mark Ruffalo will be playing Banner, which I thought seemed like a good choice, until I read this. In a recent interview, Ruffalo revealed this bit of information:

"It's cool, it's gonna be great. The script is a nice combination of funny and was very in Joss Whedon's wheelhouse. And I got to see the maquette of the Hulk yesterday in full scope and it's awesome. Just like me. We're going out of our way to... first of all, I'm the first actor to actually do it in motion capture as the Hulk. And so, all the features are mine, they're just really big."

Sigh. Really? Just like you? That's not a good thing, Mark Ruffalo. Especially since you look nothing like the Hulk. The Hulk has a very distinct look, it would be like drawing Jay Leno with a little chin....it wouldn't be Leno. Same goes for the Hulk, he has to have a short nose, large brow and a giant mouth. He needs to look primal, more ape-like....NOT HUMAN!

I decided to google Ruffalo and turn his face into the Hulk but make it still look like him. It just doesn't work. I don't know how they will get it to work. It seemed like the more I pushed the features into place to look like the Hulk, the less it looked like Ruffalo. Oh well, we shall see. My fingers are crossed that Hollywood does it right this time.

The Sketchbook Project 2011

So, I decided last September that I was going to get back into sketching and participate in this Sketchbook Project that some of the guys at work were talking about doing. Art House sends you a moleskine for $24.00 and you can fill it with whatever you want, send it back by Jan 15th and it goes on a cross-country tour, then permanently into the Brooklyn Art Library. I started drawing in it but the paper was thin and of poor quality so I got annoyed and it sat on my desk at home for a few months.

Then a week ago, (in true procrastinator fashion) I decided to finish it so I began rummaging through a bunch of sketchbooks, stacks of papers and digital files looking for stuff that didn't totally suck that I could print out and stick into the moleskine. It ended up being pretty thick by the time I was done taping pages into it but I got it done and in the mail and it felt good to finish it. Even if only a handful of the pages were actually sketched for the book.

Shadowbox Bot!

I have been such a blog slacker lately. Been pretty busy lately but managed to learn some new stuff in zbrush 4 while creating this guy. It's a model I created for our art blog at work. Unique parts were modeled in zbrush using shadow box, then decimated and imported into 64 bit 3DSMax and assembled, posed and exported back into zbrush for rendering. My son Connor presented me with the COOLEST art book for father's day. Shadowline: The Art of Iain McCaig. I opened it up on the floor so we could look at it together. He was so excited, he started dancing around it and stepped on one of the pages, crumpling it up. Thank you, son.

Parks'n'Rec fan art

I did some quick, 1 hour sketches of some of the characters a while back and I thought it would be fun to go back and polish them up. I've been inspired by Mark Sinclair, one of the many talented guys I worked with at Ensemble and another amazing artist from cghub I recently discovered, Vincent Altimore.

My caricatures are not nearly exaggerated enough, but hopefully I can get out of my comfort zone a bit and push the features more and more with each one I do. I'll probably tackle Leslie Knope and Tom Haverford next and then maybe I can do some from "the office".

Ninja vs. Robot

Our site at Robot has recently changed with some of my work on the front page. This guy evolved from a cute little bot to a towering alien invader. I can neither confirm nor deny if this is related to what we're doing at Robot. You'll just have to wait and see.

I modeled this dude in Max and took him into zbrush for some little details, decimated him, brought him back into max and modeled some simple buildings and highway overpasses. Everything else is photoshop. Hope you guys dig it!

Trailer Hood Redesign

So about 4 years ago me and my homie had this idea for a graphic novel that never got any further than a few character descriptions and some rough sketches. It was called 'TrailerHood' and one of the characters that I came up with was a little boy named, 'William Pumkin'. He was the only one I took to completion (see old drawings at the top) and I even created a sculpy maquette of him. I recently started going back to these characters and I'm wanting to make them all in zbrush and then someday pose them all for a big group render.

What inspired me to revisit this guy was a movie my wife and I watched called, 'Son of Rambow'. The bully in the movie totally reminded me of William so I took a picture of him from the movie and using liquify in photoshop, reshaped and painted over him into what I envisioned for the character.
So this is where I'm at after just a couple of hours. I'm still adding the hair pieces, (which takes forever) and then I have a bunch of expressions that I want to post as soon as I finish the teeth. Hope you guys dig it.

RAWWWRRR!!

Our latest theme for the Robot blog was 'saturday morning cartoons' so I thought it would be fun to make a Panthro bust. I started with my hulk torso, pushing and pulling so that his proportions weren't so hulkish (although his hands are still SUPER huge). I built all his gear and spikes from basic primitive shapes and by extracting sections from the torso. I didn’t want to redesign him but there were certain things I didn’t like about the original that I wanted to adjust like the spikes on his gear. They were really thin and flimsy looking in the cartoon so I bulked them up and shortened them. The other thing was his nose. In the cartoon they have very human-looking noses but I thought it would be cooler to make his nose more cat-like. I found a thundercats font for the base which was convenient. Hope you guys dig it!

From "1s and 0s" to "on my desk"

Well after a couple months of anticipation, the folks over at Ownage finished my print of Dr. Root! It came out to be 13" from the top of his hand to the bottom of the base. I could not be happier with how it turned out. It's in transit and I should have it on my desk this week. I am so amazed at how much detail they were able to get out of the sculpt and how well they did with the paint job! Ownage rules!

Not much progress on Hulk. I got distracted with another small project. We're doing a "Saturday morning cartoon" themed project at Robot this month, so I've been working on a 'Panthro' bust from 'Thundercats'. Just need to finish the nunchukka and the base and I'll post some images.

I will finish this sculpt if it kills me! Made some more progress over the last month with an hour here and there. I'm starting to detail the hands then I'll go in and add some more details to the body. I'm really taking my time on this project but I hope to have it finished before the end of the year. Maybe I can make Wolverine with the same mesh and save me some time. We shall see.....

I've been really bad about keeping this blog updated....never enough time. I posted this a few weeks ago on zbrush central in my sketchbook thread and on the Robot blog. Our latest theme at Robot was GIJOE, so I made a J. Scott Campbell - styled Baroness model in zbrush. Looking at it now, I think I should have exaggerated the legs and made them longer... which is funny because they were longer at one point, but my brain wanted to make them normal proportioned. I may go back and push that further and come up with a better pose for her. I also tried to be ambitious and make the Cobra HISS tank for her to lean against but I never found the time to finish it off. Oh well, maybe I'll come back to it later.......probably not.

I started this a long time ago during GameArtisan's first Comicon Challenge but never finished. Offload Studios' tactual sweetness

The folks at Offload Studios were nice enough to create a tactual 3D print of Dr. Root for the Gnomon Gallery. These are the images they sent me before the show. It stands 10 inches from top to bottom and they were able to get quite a bit of detail out of the ztool.

This is the image that was on display at the Gnomon Gallery. There were quite a few people there and I got to see some old friends and meet some of my fellow contestants. The room was filled with gorgeous prints of heroes and villains from the contest. Offload Studios was there as well with several amazing 3D prints including a 10inch version of Dr. Root. I will post some images soon from the show.

Gnomon Gallery! This Saturday!

I was asked to submit a render of Dr. Root for the Gnomon Gallery Show in LA this Saturday and I was more than thrilled to participate. I've never had art in a gallery before, so this is a first for me.

The show will feature the entries of 23 artists from the Pixologic Action Hero Contest.

The art will be displayed in 2D and 3D prints and Offload Studios will be there promoting the 3D prints along with Axiotron promoting the Modbook. Can't wait!

Halo Wars in stores NOW!

Yes, I'm a bit behind with my blog, I know but hey, on Tuesday the 3rd, a really fun game came out for Xbox 360 called Halo Wars and I haven't wanted to do anything else but play it. Now even if you don't like RTS games and have not played them you should seriously consider picking it up because it is so much fun and so easy to play, you will be jacking wraiths and banshees with your Spartans in no time. Grand Prize Winner!

Well after 2 months of hard work and stress, I finally finished my entry for the Pixologic Action Hero Contest. After a week of the judges narrowing it down to 10 artists and a week of the community choosing their favorite, I somehow managed to come out on top. It was a great experience and a great honor to compete alongside so many talented artists and I can't express how thrilled I was to win. Now to see if I can get a 3D print of Dr. Root!

Pixologic Action Hero Contest!

I've decided to enter the Pixologic Action Hero Contest. The challenge is to make up your own hero or villain by drawing a concept, coming up with a back story and then modeling, texturing, posing and rendering the final from zbrush. The character I came up with is a villain called "Dr. Root" aka Dr. Kyle Rutmeyer. Attached is a couple progress images of the concept. I don't know if I'll finish but I at least started. First Blog!

Ok, I'm finally getting my blog up! After seeing all my concept friends posting stuff on their blogs, I thought it might be a great way to push myself to do a little something every day, if it's a quick zbrush sculpt or sketch or whatever. I'm going to start with something Christmas-ish.
